VDOT has several Specific Special Signing Programs in addition to the Logo, TOD, Historical Markers, SGS, and GMSS. These special signing programs are listed below.
Civil War Trails
Civil War Trails program signs may be installed on interstate, primary and secondary facilities and may be installed as stand-alone structures or attached to existing sign structures. This program is exempt from the IDSP criteria and annual fee requirements. All costs associated with this program, including costs for the fabrication, installation, maintenance, and replacement of these signs, shall be the responsibility of the requesting entity.
Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries Birding and Wildlife Trails
The Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail program is an initiative established by the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries that creates an organized network of over 600 viewing sites highlighting the best places to see birds and wildlife in the Commonwealth.
The Birding and Wildlife Trail program allows for signs to be installed on interstate (under the Logo Program), primary and secondary facilities. This special signing program is exempt from the IDSP’s annual fee requirements. All costs associated with this program, including costs for fabrication, installation, maintenance, and replacement of these signs is the responsibility of the requesting entity. Virginia Waterways
Virginia Waterways Signing Program
Waterway signs form part of the Virginia’s outreach program with The Department of Conservation and Recreation and The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality. These signs raise awareness on the impact of watershed areas in the state. These signs are installed on interstate, primary and secondary facilities.
*The Virginia Waterways signage program do not incur an annual ad space cost, but fabrication, installation, maintenance, and replacement of the sign is the responsibility of the enquiring entity.
Winery Program
Signing requirements for wineries and farmers’ markets are included in the participation criteria in the Attractions category of the Logo Program and in the TODS Program. Wineries and vineyards are no longer accepted under the SGS program. However, those signs that were included as SGS prior to September 15, 2004 have been “Grandfathered” into the system.
State Scenic River Program
The Virginia Scenic Rivers Program identifies, designates, and helps protect rivers and streams that possess outstanding scenic, recreational, historic, and natural characteristics of statewide significance for future generations. State Scenic River signs may be installed on interstate, primary and secondary facilities. All costs associated with this program, including costs for the fabrication, maintenance, installation and replacement of these signs, shall be the responsibility of the requesting entity. A list of Scenic Rivers is provided by DCR and is sometimes combined with waterways signs.
